November 27, 2006My poor grandmother
November 10, 2006My grandmother fell over breaking and dislocating bones in her finger, requiring surgery to pin it back together.
It was a simple fall that occured whilst she was preparing food in the kitchen, and I suppose she was lucky that it wasn’t worse.
My grandmother will be 80 years old in less than 4 weeks. When most people her age fall over they break a hip, collar-bone, or something equally nasty and painfull. Due to the spritely (comparitively) nature of my grandparents my grandmother’s reflexes saved her from injuring herself even more badly.
I got a slighly panicky call from my grandfather minutes after the fall, but it was one of the only times I have not been near a phone of some kind. Nevertheless I got the message in less than 10 minutes, and I rushed to her aid. I was relieved to find that her injury was not life threatening, but it’s still a situation with complications and ramifications. For example, surgery under anaesthetic becomes very risky in elderly people, as does the risk of infection.
Thus the next 4 days were Very tense whilst we waited for news from the hospital. (Yes - 4 days! It seems that hospital cut backs are hitting harder than ever.)
We are so glad that she is home safe and well, and we all wish her a speedy recovery.
Bless her.
